Moving Tips

Countdown to your moving day

Moving house is exciting. You get a fresh start, new opportunities, and the chance to make a house a home.

But whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned buyer, it can feel overwhelming at times – especially since you usually only have a few weeks to move your belongings from your old home to your new one.

From choosing an estate agent to clearing your loft and enlisting a removals company, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth move.

Getting yourself organised and using a moving house checklist should help you stay on track, ensuring you have everything packed up and ready to move when you get the keys to your new property.

Removal companies can help with packing your belongings up and moving them with their reliable fleets. All Star Removals also thinks nothing less of unpacking your items onto flat surfaces – making it easier for you to get settled into your new home.

Here are our top tips for how to move easily (without tearing your hair out, wasting money, or falling out with your family!).

    • Confirm the (approximate) date of your move.
    •         Book removal surveys (3-4 max) for accurate quotations and compare them.
    • Check home insurance date will start on the right date.
    • Notify utilities of departure if you’re not staying with the same provider in your new home. They’ll need to know your new address and contact details for billing purposes.
    • Order new furniture or carpets for the lounge, stairs, landing, or bedroom if needed.
    • Start clearing lofts/garages etc. General de-clutter to remove anything you don’t want to take to your new house.
    • Select your removal company – go with the removal firm you feel is best suited to your move, rather than the cheapest one promising to save money.
    • Order any packaging materials needed.

Top tip: All Star Removals don’t just offer house move help, we also provide full and part-packing services – supplying everything from wardrobe boxes to packing paper, bubble wrap, and tape.

    •  Let TV/phone/broadband services know your move-in date so you can get your internet up and running immediately.
Notify doctors, dentists, vets, churches, schools, and work that you’re moving house to ensure letters are sent to your new address.
    •  Avoid living out of boxes for a few weeks and start packing the non-essentials from smaller rooms that aren’t used often (e.g. the spare bedroom, garden shed, or the loft where you stow the Christmas decorations and surfboards).
    • Notify the milkman, paperboy, or any other additional services or subscriptions of your house move.
Send out change of address cards to friends and family (FREE of charge with us!).
    • Confirm arrangements with the removal company (i.e. times, address details, etc.) to guarantee a stress-free process from start to finish.
    • Make the neighbours at your old and new places aware of your plans in case of parking or access issues.
    • Arrange for children or pets to be looked after on the day to ensure a smooth move.
Pack up any items that won’t be needed at your new property.
    • Really concentrate on only having essentials left to pack now.
    • Keep out phone chargers, wallets/purses, keys, and any documentation needed regarding your move.
    • Dismantle any furniture that you have decided to do yourself and keep all fittings secure (preferably together and clearly labelled to aid assembly in your new house).
    • Sort all keys out for your property and perhaps label them for the new owner.
    • Prepare a bag of items for your last night so the rest can be packed away – things like the kettle, tea, coffee, milk, bin bags, and toilet roll.
Prepare garden items all into one area to make it easier for the removal team to load them onto the van while minimising mess.
    • Pack up your final bits and pieces.
    • Ensure you leave out enough cups and tea bags for your removal team…and maybe a pack of Hob-Nob’s (All Star Removals’ favourite!).
    • Take your meter readings on the day you move out so you can give them to your energy supplier (keep a note of them and the date in case you don’t agree with your bill).
    • Relax, safe in the knowledge that our professional team will transport your belongings safely to your new area.
Do a final walkaround to ensure nothing is left behind.
